ISA Certification Explained

What Does It Mean to Be a Certified Arborist?

The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) is the world's leading professional organization for tree care. An ISA Certified Arborist has passed a comprehensive exam covering tree biology, soil science, pruning standards, pest and disease diagnosis, risk assessment, and safe work practices — and must complete continuing education every three years to keep the credential active.

In Idaho, there is no state licensing requirement for tree services, which means anyone can legally hang a sign and start cutting trees. ISA certification is the most reliable independent signal that an arborist has the knowledge to actually help — not harm — your trees.

Timothy Andra, owner and lead arborist at Timmy's Tree Service, holds ISA Certified Arborist credential PN-6478A and TRAQ (Tree Risk Assessment Qualification) certification. The company is BBB A+ accredited and fully licensed with the State of Idaho (RCE #34650).

Why It Matters

6 Reasons to Hire a Certified Arborist

Certification isn't a formality — it's the difference between tree care that helps and tree work that causes lasting damage.

Science-Based Recommendations

ISA certification requires arborists to pass a rigorous exam covering tree biology, diagnosis, pruning, risk assessment, and more. Our recommendations are rooted in arboriculture science — not guesswork or upsells.

Ongoing Education Requirement

ISA certification isn't a one-time test. Certified arborists must earn continuing education units every three years to maintain their credential, ensuring knowledge stays current with the latest research and best practices.

Accountability & Ethics

ISA certified arborists are bound by a code of ethics and professional standards. Certification can be revoked for unethical conduct — giving you real accountability that unlicensed companies simply cannot provide.

Proper Diagnosis

Many tree problems — disease, pests, root issues, structural defects — are invisible to the untrained eye. A certified arborist can accurately diagnose what's wrong and recommend the correct treatment rather than defaulting to removal.

Protect Your Investment

Trees add 10–20% to property value when properly maintained. Improper pruning or unnecessary removal by unlicensed crews destroys that value. A certified arborist helps you preserve and grow your landscape investment.

Safety & Liability

Tree work carries serious risk. Certified arborists are trained in industry safety standards (ANSI Z133) and proper rigging techniques. Combined with our full insurance coverage, you're protected from liability on every job.

ISA Certification FAQs

What does ISA Certified Arborist mean?

ISA stands for the International Society of Arboriculture — the leading professional organization in tree care. An ISA Certified Arborist has passed a comprehensive exam covering all aspects of arboriculture, including tree biology, diagnosis, pruning standards, risk assessment, and soil management. Certification must be renewed every three years through continuing education.

What is your ISA certification number?

Timothy Andra holds ISA Certified Arborist credential PN-6478A. You can verify this directly on the ISA website at treesaregood.org using the credential lookup tool.

What is TRAQ certification?

TRAQ stands for Tree Risk Assessment Qualification — a specialized credential issued by the ISA for arborists qualified to conduct formal, documented tree risk assessments. TRAQ reports are commonly required for insurance claims, real estate transactions, legal disputes, and municipal permit applications. Our arborists hold TRAQ certification.

Why does ISA certification matter vs. just hiring a cheap tree service?

Unlicensed tree companies are common and can cause serious, expensive damage. Improper pruning cuts — particularly flush cuts or over-pruning — create permanent wounds and entry points for disease and decay. A certified arborist is trained to make the right cuts at the right time using ANSI A300 pruning standards. The wrong cut on a valuable tree can cost far more in the long run than the savings from a cheap crew.

Do I need a certified arborist for a simple tree removal?

For a straightforward removal of a small, healthy tree in an open area, you may not strictly need certification — but you should still verify insurance. Where certification really matters is for hazard trees near structures, trees with suspected disease or structural defects, trees that require a permit, or any situation where the wrong decision could be costly or dangerous. When in doubt, the free assessment by our arborist costs you nothing.

Can a certified arborist save a tree I thought needed to come down?

Often, yes. Many trees that appear dead, diseased, or hazardous can be treated, pruned, or cabled to extend their life significantly. Our ISA-certified arborists will give you an honest assessment of every option — we don't default to removal just because it's the easiest answer.
