Don't leave it behind

What happens if you leave a stump in the ground

Stumps don't just sit there — they actively cause problems that compound over time. Here's the typical progression.

First season — sprouting begins

Most hardwood species send up new shoots within weeks of removal. These sprouts draw energy from the existing root system and are difficult to eliminate without removing the stump. Left unchecked, you're essentially growing a new tree.

Year 2 — pests move in

As the stump begins to soften and decay, it becomes prime habitat for termites, carpenter ants, and wood-boring beetles. These pests don't stay in the stump — they migrate toward your home and neighboring structures.

Years 3–5 — fungal root rot spreads

Root rot fungi that weakened the original tree can travel through soil and connected root networks to nearby healthy trees. Honey fungus in particular is aggressive and can cause significant damage to your remaining landscape.

5+ years — slow, messy decomposition

Eventually the stump breaks down, but the process is slow and unsightly — creating a collapsing, spongy hazard that's difficult and more expensive to grind than a fresh stump. Removing it promptly after tree removal is always the better value.

Bundling stump grinding with your tree removal visit is almost always cheaper than scheduling it as a separate return trip.

The process

What actually happens when we grind a stump

Stump grinding is faster and cleaner than most homeowners expect. Here's exactly what the process looks like — including how deep we go and what's left behind.

Cross-section view — stump grinding depth & reach
Stump & root system
Grinding zone (6–12" below grade)
Wood chip grindings produced
Roots decay naturally underground
The grinding machine fits through a standard 36" gate and leaves the surrounding lawn intact. Most residential jobs are complete in under 90 minutes.

Ready in 4–8 weeks

Planting grass or laying sod

The most straightforward outcome after stump grinding. Remove the grindings first — they're high in carbon and will inhibit germination if left in place.

  • Remove all grindings from the void area completely
  • Fill with quality topsoil to match surrounding grade
  • Tamp lightly and water to settle before seeding
  • Seed or lay sod normally — water daily for 2 weeks
  • New grass establishes within 4–8 weeks

Do you clean up after the job?

Yes, every time. Our crew removes all debris, branches, and wood from your property and leaves it clean. If you'd like to keep the wood for firewood or mulch, just let us know when you schedule and we'll make arrangements.

When is the best time to trim trees?

The ideal time depends on the species, but late winter through early spring — before new growth begins — is generally best for most trees. Trimming during dormancy reduces stress, minimizes disease exposure, and allows the tree to heal quickly once the growing season starts.
